Nobody Packs Tissue Paper Around Nothing

This message is for the christening gown folded in tissue paper that you cannot throw out and cannot explain

Sadie Alcaraz got the rented van back four hours late, and it was because of a box she had not planned to open.

Fifth move in nine years. She had it down to a science by then. Everything she owned went in the van in one trip, the mugs rode inside the sock drawer, the tape gun lived in her back pocket, and she could pack an entire kitchen with a playlist going and not remember doing any of it afterward.

Then, in the hall closet, behind the winter coats, the box.

Brown. Soft at the corners. Taped and retaped so many times the tape had layers in it, like rings in a tree.

She knew what was inside. She had known for nine years.

She sat down on the floor of the empty closet and opened it anyway, because it was the fifth time she had carried it across a city and she had never once looked.

Tissue paper. White, gone faintly yellow along the folds. And inside the tissue paper, a christening gown, small enough to lie across her two open hands, cotton lace at the hem, and thirty two tiny buttons down the back that somebody had fastened on her when she was eleven weeks old.

Under the gown, a card in her grandmother's handwriting, the looping kind nobody writes anymore.

Today we asked God for you. Lola prayed the whole night before.

Sadie was thirty. She had not been inside a church since she was nineteen except for two weddings and one funeral. If you had stopped her on the stairs with the van still running and asked her what she believed, she could not have told you, and people had asked, more or less, and she had changed the subject every single time.

And she had moved this box five times.

She sat there long enough for the light on the closet wall to go orange. She was not crying over a dress. She had thrown out a prom dress. She had thrown out a graduation robe and two boxes of her own paintings. She had thrown out things that meant more on paper than a scrap of cotton with lace on it.

She could not throw this out and she could not tell you why.

That was the part she finally said out loud to the empty closet, and it came out almost angry.

"Why can't I get rid of you?"

The answer came back before she was ready for it, the way the true ones do.

Because it is not a dress. Because somebody once stood in a room holding you and said a sentence about God over your whole life before you could speak a word of your own, and thirty years later you are still standing inside the reach of that sentence, and you know it, and you have known it for five moves and a tape gun.

She folded the tissue paper back over it. She taped the box a sixth time.

Then she said it out loud, to nobody, in a closet with the light gone orange.

"Okay. Then I want it to be mine."

The van went back four hours late. She would have sat there longer.

Nobody Packs Tissue Paper Around Nothing

The order of the sentence

There is a line in Deuteronomy that almost everybody quotes from the middle, and the middle is not where it starts.

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Read the order. Not the content. The order.

Before one syllable about children, before the sitting and the walking and the lying down and the getting up, before any of the passing along, God says one thing. Shall be in thine heart.

He does not build the handing on first. He builds the holding first. And everybody standing in that verse is somebody's child and somebody's parent both, which means the verse already knows that faith arrives at a person down a row of people. It is not embarrassed about the row. It simply turns, at the very beginning, and does the one thing a row can never do for you. It puts the words in your own chest, where nobody else's hand goes.

So hear this, because it is not sentiment and it is not my kind opinion about your childhood. You are not holding a hand-me-down. The words are in your heart, and He is the one who put them there. Deuteronomy 6:6 says shall be in thine heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the putting, and He has never once installed a copy of somebody else's faith in a person and called that finished.

Now, the thing you have been calling sentiment.

You have been explaining that box to yourself for years with words like nostalgia and guilt and I just cannot throw out family things. All reasonable. None of them true, and underneath it you know they are not true, because you threw out plenty of family things. What you have been calling sentiment is a live thing in you, and live things do not come out of tissue paper. Scripture says the Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God, and that witness does not always arrive as certainty. Sometimes it arrives as a pull toward one small box that you cannot argue yourself out of.

That is not weakness, and it is not a woman being silly on a closet floor. That is the Holy Spirit keeping His hand on something He put there, and it is the plainest evidence in your whole apartment.

Here is what nobody told you, which is why the auditing never ended.

You have been trying to find out whether the faith is yours by checking whether it feels like it started with you. Nothing true about God starts with you. Not one thing. It started with Him, it came to you down a row of chairs and a night of praying and a woman with looping handwriting, and none of that makes it secondhand, any more than a river is secondhand because it came from a spring you never saw.

And nothing is being taken away from anybody here. Your grandmother's night of praying was real, and you are still the one she asked for. It was not a rehearsal and it was not a technicality. She stood there and asked, and God is not embarrassed by the gown or the row or the family. The written word honors the row. It simply refuses to stop there, and the Holy Spirit refuses to stop there, and that is very good news for the person on the closet floor.

Which is you. Let me say the rest of it to you and not about her.

You are not late. You are thirty or fifty or seventy years inside a sentence somebody said over you, and the One who heard that sentence has never once mislaid it. That is not a feeling I am talking you into. It is what is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes it live in the room you are sitting in tonight, at the hour you are sitting there.

The breakthrough

You are not going to settle this by remembering harder. The written word never asked you to, and the Holy Spirit has not been waiting on your memory.

You have been going back through your own life hunting for the moment it became yours, and the moment you are looking for is not behind you. It is right now, and it does not require you to produce one document.

It is already yours. Not pending, not provisional. Yours, tonight, in the room you are in. God put His own words in your heart, He said so in His word long before you were born, and the Holy Spirit is not standing there waiting on your paperwork to make that sentence true. He is waiting to be believed on it.

So stop asking the box. The box has told you everything it knows. It can prove the row. It was never able to prove your chest, and it was never asked to.

Nobody packs tissue paper around nothing. Somebody wrapped that gown because a thing was precious, and the thing was you, and the God who was asked for you that night has been answering ever since, quietly, for thirty years, in a woman who kept moving one box she could not explain.

Declare this over yourself

Your standing is Christ's standing delegated to you, and you speak as His ambassador and never as the owner of anybody else's conscience. Keep these words under "not my will, but Thine." God remains sovereign over every room and every answer, and His written word remains settled beneath your feet.

  1. Box in the back of the closet, you have moved with me five times, and I finally know what I was carrying. The word of God says these words shall be in my heart, so in the name of Jesus you stop being a question in this house and you stand there as the sign that somebody asked for me before I could ask for myself.
  2. Suspicion that everything I feel about God is only borrowed off my family and there is nothing of my own underneath it, get out of my chest in the name of Jesus. Holy Spirit, You do not keep house in a copy, and live things do not come out of tissue paper.
  3. Lord Jesus, You put Your own words in my heart, in the one place nobody else's hand can reach, and You did it while I was still calling it sentiment. I am saying one true sentence out loud tonight in an empty room, and I am not waiting for anybody to tell me it counted.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
