They cook together every other Saturday, and they have done it for six years.
It is the best thing in both of their weeks. Thyme and scallion and a chipped blue bowl that has been in one family or the other since before either of them could reach the counter. They talk over the pot. They talk over each other. Vonnie chops and Sherelle stirs, and by nine the kitchen smells like the whole street.
And somewhere in the first year, easily, without anything being decided, Vonnie said it. We are the same, you and me. We are not the churchy type.
Sherelle said nothing. She laughed a little, the way you do, and reached for the pepper.
Except that Sherelle prays. Every morning, sitting on the edge of the bed with her feet on the cold floor. She has a Bible in the drawer under her passport, and she reads it, and there are seven verses in it underlined so hard the ink has come through. She believes it. All of it. She has believed it since she was nineteen and has never said one word of it out loud to the person who knows what she takes in her coffee.
She did not lie. That is the thing that makes it so hard to put down. She never claimed anything. She simply let a sentence stand in the room, once, and then let it stand again, and then it was six years old and it had furniture in it.
Then, in March, Vonnie's sister got sick. Properly sick, the kind with appointments in it.
They were at the counter. The pot was going. And Vonnie said, not even looking up from the board: if you were the praying type, I would ask you to pray for her.
And Sherelle heard her own voice say, I will be thinking of her.
She stirred the pot. Vonnie kept chopping. Nothing happened at all, and Sherelle stood there in her own kitchen with the wooden spoon in her hand, six years of loving that woman, and no way at all to tell her the one thing she had.
You know that kitchen. Maybe it is a car, or a break room, or a hairdresser's chair. But you know the sentence you traded for the true one, and you have been carrying it since. Sit with me a while, because I am not here to take anything off you.

What John writes down first
Let me name the low part before I say one word about the lift.
It is not that you are ashamed of Him. If someone said something cruel about Jesus in front of you, something would rise up in your chest so fast it would frighten you. That is not the problem. The problem is quieter and it has been going on longer: there is a version of you that lives in that friendship, and she is a good person and she is honest about most things, and she is missing the one thing that runs underneath everything else in you.
And now the years themselves are the wall. It was not hard at year one. At year six, saying it would mean admitting you did not say it for five, and that reckoning is what keeps a good woman quiet at a stove with a wooden spoon in her hand.
So come to John, and read what he writes down about people exactly like you.
Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue.John 12:42
Read the order. Before John says one syllable about what they did not say, he says what they were. Many believed on him. The Holy Spirit had that written down first, and He did not have to. He could have opened with the silence. He led with the believing, and the believing is what the sentence is built on.
So hear this over you now. You are counted among the believing, today, in the record God Himself keeps, and it is not a status you are working toward. Scripture puts the believing first for people who had not said it out loud, and the same Spirit who moved John to write it that way is the one who put the belief in your chest at nineteen. What you have is real, and it is not on probation.
Now, the men in that verse were afraid of losing a place in a room. You are afraid of losing a Saturday. Do not let anybody tell you that is a small thing, because it is not. Six years of a woman who knows how you take your coffee is not a small thing, and God is not embarrassed by how much you love her.
But look at what those rulers were carrying. They had something. They believed. And there was nowhere in their lives it could come out of their bodies, and a thing with nowhere to go does not stay the same size. It gets heavier. That is the weight in your chest at the counter, and it is not guilt, whatever you have been calling it.
Here is the second true thing, and it is the reason this site exists. What you believe is allowed to be seen. You have a body, and your own mouth was made for the saying of it, and that is not a privilege granted to the eloquent. The psalmist did not write let the redeemed of the Lord feel it quietly. He wrote, let the redeemed of the Lord say so, Psalm 107:2, and the Holy Spirit who inspired that line is not standing over you with a stopwatch about how long it has taken.
Now let me take one thing off you completely. Nobody here is going to send you to make a speech. There is no ceremony you have to book, no date, no announcement, no explaining of six years. Not one of those is being asked of you and none of them is what your friend needs.
Paul quotes the psalm and says, I believed, and therefore have I spoken, 2 Corinthians 4:13. Believed, therefore spoken. Not believed, therefore argued. Not believed, therefore defended. The apostles in front of a hostile council said only, we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard, Acts 4:20, which is the plainest sentence in the book: this is what I have seen, and I am not able to keep pretending I have not.
One sentence. That is the whole of it. And you already know what yours is, because you had it in your mouth in March and you swapped it out at the last second.
I will pray for her.
That is it. That is the sentence. Five words at a counter, and you do not explain them afterwards, and you do not apologize for six years, and you do not brace for what she says. You are not required to defend it. You were never required to defend it. The Spirit of God is well able to carry five true words across a kitchen, and He has been carrying words across rooms since before either of you was born.
Here is the turn.
The years of quiet are not a debt you have to pay off before you are allowed to speak. They are the ache God is answering right now, and He is not asking you to account for them. Nothing in Scripture makes you go back and settle the record before you open your mouth today.
What is being handed to you is your own voice, in your own body, in your own kitchen. Your faith is yours in Christ, and it was given to you, not awarded to you for good behavior, so it does not have to pass an interview before it is allowed out.
We flip the switch. He sends the current. What happens in your friend when five true words land is His, and He may do it in His own way and in an hour neither of you notices.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you are. This is yours in Christ, given to you and not earned by you, so your own mouth carries a real and delegated authority when it says a true thing. The word is the ground under these lines, the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them across a room, and what your friend does with them is between her and God, however He answers. Speak to the sentence first, then evict the arithmetic, then turn to Him.
- Sentence I let stand for six years, you are not the truth about me, and you never were. Scripture counts me among the many who believed on Him before it says one word about anybody's silence, and I am counted there in ink. You have had the kitchen long enough, and I am taking my own mouth back.
- Reckoning of five quiet years, get out of my chest, in the name of Jesus. The redeemed of the Lord are told to say so, and there is no clause in it about how late they are. God is not running a tab, and neither am I from here on.
- Lord, I believed, and therefore I am speaking, and Your Spirit is well able to carry five true words across a counter. What I believe is allowed to be seen, and my own body gets to say it. I am telling my friend I will pray for her sister, and I am not explaining it afterwards.
