You walk past it twice a day and you have not looked at it in years.
Second frame from the door, the gold one with the thin bevel, hung slightly too high because your father hung it and he never measured anything in his life. Nine of you in a row. White blouse. Borrowed shoes, half a size small, and you can still feel where they pinched. Your grandmother made a cake in the shape of an open book.
Everyone in that picture is smiling and one of them is you.
Last Thursday you stopped. You do not know why. You lifted it off its hook and stood in the hallway holding it in both hands with the light coming through the glass in the front door, and you did the thing you have been doing privately for a very long time.
You looked for yourself in it.
Not your face. You can find your face. You were looking for the girl behind it, the one who was thirteen in that row, and for the answer to one question you have wanted to ask her for years.
Did you mean it, or were you doing what the row was doing?
She does not answer. She never answers. She is a girl in a photograph with borrowed shoes, she moved out of you a long time ago and left no forwarding address, and the only witness who could tell you whether any of this was ever yours is gone.
You put the frame back. A little crooked. And you went and stood in the living room in your coat and said out loud, to nobody at all, "I do not know if any of this is mine."
The house did not fall in.
Something answered, though. Not a voice. More like the sense of being read, of being turned toward and taken in all the way down by Somebody who had been in the hallway the whole time. And underneath it, arriving from a direction your own thinking had not been running in, one plain line.
You were never in the photograph. You were in the girl. And I am not in the photograph either.

The covenant nobody photographed
There is a sentence God says about how He does this, and the striking thing is where He says He puts it.
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.Jeremiah 31:33
Inward parts. In their hearts. Not handed down the row. Not carried across a table. Not signed by a proxy while you stood there in shoes that pinched.
He writes on the inside, in His own hand, in a place no camera has ever reached and no photograph has ever held. That is why you cannot find it in the frame. It was never in the frame. You have been searching a picture for a thing God said plainly He keeps somewhere else.
You have God's own handwriting inside you. Not a copy of your mother's, not a tracing of the row's, His, and Jeremiah 31:33 is where He said He would do exactly that, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the writing and has never once needed a witness in the hall to countersign it.
Now hear the other half, because the shame in this is going to reach for the people in that photograph, and they do not deserve it.
Paul wrote to a young man about a faith that came to him through his family, and he did not treat that as a problem to be solved.
When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.2 Timothy 1:5
Which dwelt first. Scripture says the handing on is real, and calls the faith in the grandmother genuine and unfeigned, and then says the quiet thing that settles this whole ache: in thee also. Not instead. Also. The row was not a con. Those people meant every word, and the cake in the shape of a book was love, and none of that is what is in question tonight.
You were loved into that row, and that love was not a counterfeit of anything. What you cannot find is not missing from the day. It is written somewhere the day could not photograph, and 2 Timothy calls it unfeigned wherever it dwells, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to devalue your grandmother in order to own your own faith.
Let me say the thing you have not said out loud.
You have been asking a thirteen year old to sign for you. Every quiet season, every flat prayer, every service where everybody else seemed to feel something, you have gone back down the hall to that frame and tried to get her to certify it, and she cannot, and so the file never closes. That is not weakness. That is a person trying to authenticate a memory, which is the one thing a memory can never do, because the standard of proof keeps moving and the witness keeps not answering.
Put it down. You are not on trial and you never were. In Christ you are known already, all the way through, and His word in Jeremiah 31:33 stands as I will be their God, and they shall be my people, present and possessive and needing nobody's signature but His own. The Holy Spirit inside you is the seal on that, and a seal is not something you produce, it is something you carry.
And look at the line that comes next, because it is aimed straight at you.
And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD.Jeremiah 31:34
From the least of them. The least, in that sentence, is not the worst. It is the smallest, the one at the end of the row, the one who cannot tell, the one who has nothing to bring but the question. God put the least first in His own sentence. And the word for know there is not know about. It is the word for a person being known by name.
You are known by name, from the least of you, and God wrote that promise down long before you were born, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it off an old page and into a hallway with a crooked frame in it.
So you are not going back down the hall tonight to interrogate a girl in borrowed shoes.
The photograph can stay where it is, crooked, and it can go on being what it truly is, which is a good picture of a day when a whole room stood up and loved you. It was never the deed. It was never asked to be, and Jeremiah 31:33 put the deed somewhere the Holy Spirit keeps rather than somewhere a hook holds.
Here is what is actually true in your chest right now. God has written His own law into your inward parts, in His own hand. It is not pending. It is not conditional on you producing a feeling, a memory, or a witness. Jeremiah 31:33 is not an offer, it is a covenant, and the Holy Spirit is the finger that does the writing.
Speak, and leave the rest with Him. However He answers, and He answers as He chooses, He is not answering a stranger and He is not checking a photograph first.
Declare this over yourself
Stand in the hall to say these, with the frame back on its hook. The authority in them is not yours by nature and it is not the row's to hand out: it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, and Jeremiah 31:33 is the deed it rests on, carried off the page and into your mouth by the Holy Spirit. Say them out loud and leave the outcome with Him, because He answers as He chooses, and He has never once answered you as a stranger.
- Photograph in the hall, you are a good picture of a day I was loved, and you were never the deed to my soul. The Word of God says He puts His law in the inward parts and writes it on the heart, which is a place no camera has ever reached. Hang where you are; what I have been hunting for was never behind your glass.
- Verdict that what I carry is only a handed down copy, you do not get to sit in my chest another night, and I am putting you out in the name of Jesus. Jesus Christ knows His own by name, and I stopped needing a thirteen year old to sign for me the day I learned that God signs for Himself. I am not waiting on her handwriting; I have His.
- Lord, You wrote this on the inside where nobody could photograph it, and Your word says You put Your law in my inward parts and be my God and I be Your people. From the least of them, You said, and I am the least of them, and I am saying one sentence of my own out loud tonight in a hallway with nobody in it.
