The Cup You Have Poured A Thousand Times

This message is for the prayer I say in my father's language and have never once said in my own words

The guests came at first light, four of them, unannounced, the way people do when they have been driving all night and the last stretch went faster than they thought.

Sami heard the gate and knew what the next twenty minutes were before he was properly awake. Roast the beans on the flat pan until the smoke goes blue at the edges. Crack four cardamom pods under the heel of your hand, not with a knife, because a knife bruises them and you want them split clean. Grind fine. Three risings in the pot and never once let it climb over the lip, because the whole thing is ruined the second it boils, and the ruin is not fixable. You start again.

Then pour from high enough that the guest can hear it land.

He was thirty and he had been doing it since he was nine. His father Ilyas taught him standing behind his shoulder with a hand over his hand, and by twelve Sami could run the whole sequence in the dark, and by twenty the men who came would take the cup, drink, sit back and say the same thing every time.

"That is your father's coffee exactly."

And it was.

That morning Ilyas could not get up. His back had gone in the night and he was lying flat on the floor in the next room with a cushion under his knees, listening to the whole thing happen through a wall: the pan, the mill, the cardamom, his son's hands doing his own hands' work.

Sami carried the tray out. He poured for four men in the courtyard at first light, and the light came in low and gold over the wall and caught the steam off the cups, and every one of them said it was Ilyas's coffee.

Then he came back in to set the pot down, and his father spoke from the floor.

"Pour yourself one."

"I drink tea," Sami said. He had always drunk tea. Everybody in that house knew he drank tea.

There was a long pause from the floor, the kind that means a man is deciding whether to say the thing.

"Sami. You are thirty years old. You have poured that a thousand times and you have never once had a cup."

And Sami stood in his own kitchen holding a pot he could make in his sleep, and he had no answer at all.

He poured a small one. He did not sit down, which is not how anybody drinks it, and he drank it standing up like a man taking medicine, and it was not what he expected.

It was bitter across the front of his mouth and then it went sweet a long way back, further back than he thought a taste could reach. And the cardamom was not a smell any more. It was a thing happening inside his own mouth, right then, at six in the morning, in the house he grew up in.

Thirty years an expert on something he had never had.

You know that feeling, and you have never once put it into a sentence.

You can say the prayer. You can say it in your father's language, all of it, at the speed the men say it, with the place near the end where the voice drops. Your accent is good. You have never dropped a line of it in your life.

And you have never once said one sentence of it in your own words.

The Cup You Have Poured A Thousand Times

The audit nobody knows you are running

Let me name what you have actually been doing, because you have never told anybody and it has been going on a long time.

You have been running an audit. Quietly, for years. You watch people at the front and try to work out whether theirs looks realer than yours. You listen to yourself while the words are coming out and try to catch yourself meaning them, which is a bit like trying to hear your own accent. You keep a tally of the mornings you felt something and the mornings you felt nothing, the second column is longer, and you have already decided what that column proves.

Here is the part that makes it so hard to say out loud. Nothing in that house was fake. Your father meant every word of it. Your grandmother meant it so hard it changed how she treated people, and you watched that at close range for years. You are not sitting on a fraud you quietly uncovered. You are sitting on something real that you cannot get your own hands onto, which is a lonelier thing entirely, and there is nobody at that table you could say it to without it landing like an accusation.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.Romans 10:9

Look at what Paul does with the pronouns. He is writing to a whole church, hundreds of people who will hear this read out in one room, and every word of that sentence is singular. Thy mouth. Thine heart. Not the household's mouth. Not the row's heart.

And that faith you have spent years auditing is already yours, because He handed it to you Himself and never once passed it down the row to reach you. I am not laying my own idea on you. The written word puts the confessing in your own mouth and the believing in your own heart, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes that from a fact about believers in general and makes it a fact about the person reading this.

What can be handed down, and the one thing that cannot

Everything about that coffee was handed to Sami. The pan, the mill, the count of the pods, the three risings, the height of the pour. He got all of it, free, from a man who stood behind his shoulder for years and never once made him feel slow.

The taste could not be handed to him. Not because his father held it back. Because a taste is not that kind of thing.

That is what has been going on in your family, and it is not a failure and it is nobody's fault. They gave you everything transferable: the words, the tune, the posture, the manners of it, the whole grammar of a believing house. They could not give you the having. If the having could be passed along a row, one believing grandmother would have settled the whole line, and nobody born after her would ever have needed to be met.

And the God who raised Jesus from the dead is meeting you, personally, and not the row you were sitting in. That is the plain sense of the verse rather than my flourish, and His Spirit is the one who takes a sentence written to strangers in Rome and sets it down in a kitchen at six in the morning.

The words in the other language are not the problem

I want to be careful here, because this is exactly where a message like this usually goes wrong.

That prayer is not the enemy. It is a good prayer, older than your father and probably older than the town, and when you say it you are standing in a long line of people who meant every syllable. There may well come a night when it is the only thing that will hold you.

The trouble is not that you have those words. It is that you have only ever had those words, so nothing has ever started inside you and gone out.

And you have a voice God answers in whatever language it stumbles out in, because He is not waiting for a form of words He already knows by heart. Scripture set the confession in your own mouth, which means it was always going to come out sounding like you, and the Spirit has never needed a polished sentence to work with.

Say the plainest thing there is. "God, I think this is true, and I want it to be mine." That is a confession. It is short, it is unimpressive, and it is in the right mouth.

The breakthrough

Here is what is being handed to you tonight, and it is not a program and it is not a repair for the audit.

It is the cup.

Not a new faith. Not a better one than your father's. The same one, poured into your own hand, to be tasted by you, in your own mouth, at whatever hour this is where you are sitting.

You have been standing beside that pot for thirty years being complimented on your pour.

And you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the ground you stand on when you open your mouth, not a feeling you have to work up first. The word says it of every believer, His Spirit bears witness with your spirit that it is true of you, and what you feel while you say it is His to give and was never yours to produce.

Drink the cup.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Prayer in my father's language, you are good and you are true and you are not the whole of what I have. Scripture puts the confessing in my own mouth and the believing in my own heart, both of them in the singular, so this is the night I say the plain sentence that starts in me.
  2. Fear that I have only ever handled it, you are leaving this house in the name of Jesus. You have been reading my borrowed words as evidence against me and reading them wrong, and the cup that was in my hand the whole time is full and it is mine to drink.
  3. Lord, this faith is mine because You handed it to me Yourself, and it never came along the row to reach me. You raised Jesus from the dead and You set the confession in my mouth and not in my family's, and tonight I am drinking what I have been pouring since I was nine.
