A Conscience That HoldsActs 24:16

The Sentence I Have Not Said In That Room

This message is for the sentence I have swallowed in that room every week for a year, because saying it out loud costs me something I cannot afford to lose

They came for the olives on the first cool morning of the month, the way they came every year, with long poles and sheets and a boy or two who could climb. An olive harvest is loud: the poles go up into the branches, the men beat them, the fruit comes down onto the sheets like hard rain on a roof, and by mid morning your arms are shaking and there are olives down your collar.

Yusuf was nine and he could climb better than anybody, and he knew it. His father sent him up because the pole had twice missed a heavy branch near the crown, and a boy is lighter than a ladder.

He got the branch. And then he saw them.

Right at the top, in the last bough, four or five olives nobody had touched. Fat ones, the best on the tree, because the top of an olive tree gets the most sun.

He reached.

And a hand closed around his ankle.

His father had come up two rungs behind him and taken hold of his leg, and he said one thing.

"Not that one."

Yusuf hung there and argued the way a nine year old argues, which is loudly. They are the best ones. They will rot and nobody gets them at all.

And his father said: that is why. Then he gave him the law, which Yusuf had heard read out every year of his life and never once thought about. When you beat your olive tree you do not go back over the boughs. What is left at the top is not yours. It belongs to the stranger and the orphan and the widow.

The harvest is commanded to miss some. On purpose. Every year.

Yusuf came down certain his father was wasting good fruit, and stayed certain of it for twenty years.

He stopped at a table.

He was thirty, in a room with people who had a great deal of say over his life, and the room had arrived at a sentence. Not a large one, the kind that goes around a table and everybody says their version, and it would have cost him nothing to say it.

Except that he did not believe it.

So he sat there with his tea going cold and his heart going like poles in branches, and he felt a hand close around his ankle.

There was nobody there. Nobody within a thousand miles had ever held his leg on a ladder, and he felt it in exactly the place it had been.

Not that one.

He made no speech and he told nobody what he thought of it. He let it go past him. Somebody asked about the parking, the meeting ended, and he drove home. Nothing about his week changed.

And something at the top of him was still up there.

You know that room. The sentence might be about work or a person or God Himself, and you have carried it out of there unsaid for longer than you would tell anyone.

The Sentence I Have Not Said In That Room

The two doors, and the one nobody shows you

Pressure does one thing to a room, and it does it so quietly you will not catch it. It reduces the doors to two.

Door one: say the thing. Nod, agree, repeat it back, let it go on the record as agreement with everybody. Door two: burn it down, at full volume, in front of everyone, and take whatever comes. Door two costs you the job, or the marriage that is already thin, or the family table you cannot afford to lose, so you take door one and drive home despising yourself.

There has always been a third, and it is the oldest in the book. You keep the thing intact. You do not spend it, you do not sign it away, and you do not set it on fire.

And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.Acts 24:16

Look where Paul is standing when he says that. A governor's hall in Caesarea, in custody, with a hired speaker who has just called him a plague and a judge angling for money out of him. Paul is not free and he is not winning.

And in that hall he names what he has been doing all along. I exercise myself. That is a training word, the kind you use about a body and not about a moment: he works at it daily, the way anyone works at a thing he means to still have in ten years.

And you have that same daily work in your hands today, in a room where you have said nothing at all. Scripture calls it a conscience kept toward God and toward men, a thing trained rather than a thing you were issued with or not, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that reach a person sitting in a car getting ready to go back in.

And you are allowed to keep yours whole without turning it into a fight you cannot win. Toward God, and toward men: the written word puts both directions in one sentence, Paul kept his clear toward the people prosecuting him, and His Spirit keeps a thing tender in a person with every reason to let it go hard. A grievance needs somebody to lose. A conscience only needs to stay whole.

What the harvest is not allowed to take

Now the picture, and I am telling you plainly that it is a picture.

That room can have a great deal. Your hours, your competence, your good manners, and for this season your silence. Poles reach a long way up an olive tree and take nearly everything, and that is not a tragedy, that is a harvest. But the law says you do not go back over the boughs.

When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.Deuteronomy 24:20

Those olives at the top were never the part the harvest failed to reach. They were the part it was never given.

And there is a bough at the top of you that no room on earth has ever been given the right to strip. The written word hands the top of the tree away before a single pole is lifted, so the limit is set by the One who wrote it and not by the men in the grove, and His Spirit makes that a fact about your Thursday rather than a thought about agriculture.

Four hundred years ago a man in England printed a book telling his king that a mortal man has no power over an immortal soul, and wrote his own name and address in the front of the copy he sent. He was in prison within a few years and he died there.

I am not holding him over you and neither is God. Most of us are not in front of a king. He did not print that sentence to become a measuring stick on you four centuries later. He printed it because it was true, and it is yours for nothing.

Silence is not a signature

Let me say this once and plainly.

You drive home from that room believing you agreed. You did not agree. You were quiet.

Those are not the same, and the difference is not a technicality, it is the whole architecture of the thing. A signature is an act. Silence is the absence of one. Agreement cannot be taken out of a person, it can only be given, and you have never given it, not in a year of Thursdays.

And you have not handed anything over in there, whatever the drive home has been telling you. The word says God looks on the heart while men look on the outward appearance, so the record He keeps of that room is not the one the room keeps, and His Spirit makes that true of you personally rather than true in general.

What the pressure costs, left alone long enough, is not your position. It is smaller and worse: it slowly takes your ability to find the sentence at all, until you know there is something you think and could not say it if somebody asked you kindly, in private.

That is what we are getting back tonight. Not the room. The sentence.

The breakthrough

Here is what is on the table tonight, and it is not a plan for tomorrow, because I do not know your room.

It is the pen.

Somebody has been holding it. Not by force, because a conscience cannot be taken by force, but by wear: a year of Thursdays wears a person down until they cannot remember whose handwriting they are reading.

And you are in Christ and Christ is in you, which is the ground you stand on when you speak and not a feeling you have to work up. That is what the written word says of every believer, and His Spirit bears witness with your spirit that it is true of you, and what God does with that room afterward is His to decide and never yours to produce.

The pen comes back the way it went: quietly, and in your own hand.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Room, you have had my silence for a year and you have never once had my agreement, because silence is not a signature. Scripture keeps a conscience toward God and toward men, and mine is kept in that chair, at that table, with my mouth shut and my soul my own.
  2. Voice that says a man quiet this long has already sold, get out of my house in the name of Jesus. You have been reading my silence as my handwriting and you have read it wrong, and the sentence you told me was gone is folded in my own hand where only I can find it.
  3. Lord, my conscience belongs to You and no one else gets to hold the pen. You kept Paul's clear toward You and toward men in a hall full of accusers, You are keeping mine in a room where I say nothing, and tonight I am writing the sentence down instead of swallowing it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
