Room at the Table1 Corinthians 13:7

The Socket Set Under the Lid

This message is for the message from an old friend that has been sitting unread for six weeks

Denny Sackett and Wyatt Cole rebuilt a 1968 short bed together over four winters in Denny's garage.

Four winters. A kerosene heater that never quite worked, a radio on the shelf that got two stations, and a running argument about whether the bed wood should be oak or pine that lasted eleven months and ended in oak. Denny's wife used to bring out coffee at ten and say she could hear them laughing from the kitchen with the door shut.

Then, two years and four months ago, there was a thing.

I am not going to tell you what it was. Partly because it is not mine to tell, and partly because the second I do, you will start picking a side, and this message is not for that. It is enough to say that two grown men found out they were standing a long way apart on something that mattered to both of them, and neither one moved, and words got said in a garage on a Thursday night that neither man has taken back.

They have not spoken since.

Here is what is in the bottom drawer of Denny's rolling cabinet, under a shop rag, where it has been the whole time.

Wyatt's three eighths drive socket set. The good one. His initials are scratched into the lid with a scribe, W C, the way a man marks a thing he lends out.

Every time Denny opens that drawer he sees it and shuts the drawer.

Six weeks ago a message came in on his phone.

He was standing at the kitchen counter and he saw the name come up and he turned the phone face down without opening it, and the little bold dot has been sitting at the top of his list ever since. He knows exactly where it is. He has scrolled past it, by his own honest estimate, a couple hundred times. Every single time, something goes tight and small in his chest.

And somewhere in the last six weeks he started calling that tight feeling standing firm.

Then, on a Saturday in March, he needed a fourteen millimeter deep and could not find it anywhere, and he pulled the bottom drawer all the way out to the stop.

There it was. The rag, the case, W C in the lid.

And Denny Sackett did not shut the drawer.

He picked the case up and set it on the workbench, out in the open, in the light, next to his coffee cup. He did not take it anywhere. He did not text anybody. He did not decide one single thing about oak or pine or Thursday nights or who was right.

He just stopped hiding it.

He stood there with both hands flat on that bench for a good while. And then he heard himself say, out loud, in an empty garage, "Lord, bless that man."

It surprised him more than anything had surprised him in two years and four months.

The message was still unread when he went to bed that night.

The Socket Set Under the Lid

Beareth is a load word

Paul is halfway through the most quoted chapter in the whole book, and right in the middle of it he reaches for a word off a job site.

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.1 Corinthians 13:7

Beareth. That is not a soft word. That is a weight word.

A beam bears a roof. The beam does not approve of the roof. It does not agree with the snow. It has no opinion whatsoever about the shingles. It takes the load and it does not move, and the entire house stands up because of a thing that never once had to agree with what was on top of it.

Everybody reads that verse as though love means going soft. It says the opposite. It says love holds weight it did not choose and does not agree with, and keeps holding.

You are allowed to be certain. Not one line of this asks you to shave an ounce off what you believe, or to decide quietly that you were the fool all along. That is not me being agreeable. The written word puts bearing and believing in the same breath, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a man both convinced and kind at the same time, which is a combination no man manages on his own steam.

And look at the word Paul puts at the far end of the line. Endureth. It stays.

Bearing at the front, enduring at the back, and believing and hoping held safe in between them. Whatever else that verse is doing, it is bracketing a man's convictions with two words that mean stay put.

You have not been asked to trade your conviction for the peace. Both your hands are free. Scripture never once tells a man to be less sure in order to be more loving, and the Spirit who gave that chapter is not standing over you asking you to move an inch off what you honestly believe.

So let me say where it actually went sideways in that garage, because it was not the disagreement.

The disagreement may have been necessary. Two men found out they stood a long way apart, and honest men sometimes do, and there is no shame in a hard Thursday night.

It was the drawer.

A closed drawer is not a conviction. It is a hiding place. And a man can keep a thing under a lid for so long that he starts to believe the lid is the conviction, and then anything that opens the lid feels like losing the argument.

The lid is not your faith. The lid is a rag over a socket set. The word of God gives you love that bears and endures, which is a load rating and not a surrender, and the Holy Spirit knows the difference between a man standing firm and a man with a drawer shut.

I do not know what was said in your garage. I am not going to ask, and I am not going to tell you that you were wrong, because I do not know and because it would not help you if I did.

Here is what an unlatched door actually is, and it is smaller than you think.

It is not an apology. It is not a retraction. It is not agreement, and it is not you going quiet, and it is not the beginning of a negotiation about who owes what. It is a latch, in the up position, on your side of the door.

Nothing else has to move for that latch to come up. Not your mind. Not the other man. Not the thing itself.

Right now, as you read this, you are being handed back the whole weight of what you believe and a hand free to lift a latch with. The written word holds both in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying them into a garage on a Saturday and into a phone that has been face down on a counter for six weeks.

The breakthrough

You have been calling a closed drawer a conviction. It never was one. Your conviction is fine, it has been sitting there at full weight the entire time, and nothing in this message has laid a finger on it. The written word gave you bearing and believing in the same line, and the Holy Spirit has kept both of them alive in you through two winters of silence.

What has been happening in your chest every time you scroll past that name is not firmness. It is a man holding a lid down with one hand, and that hand has been busy for six weeks doing something a conviction never needed it to do.

Today the hand comes free.

You open it and you read it to the end. Not to agree. Not to answer. Not to give an inch on the thing itself, because that inch is not on the table and never was.

You read it because love beareth, and bearing is a thing a beam does with its whole weight on and its mind entirely unchanged.

Then you put the phone down and you go on with your Saturday, and if the only other thing that happens today is that a socket set sits out on a bench in the light where you can see it, that is a good day's work.

Declare this over yourself

These words are yours to speak because you are in Christ, carrying authority that is His and delegated, never authority over another man's conscience or his conclusions. Say them under "not my will, but Thine." God may answer this in a way you did not plan, and whatever He does, His written word is what you are standing on.

  1. Message sitting unread at the top of my list, you have had six weeks of my scrolling past and you are not getting a seventh. The Word of God says love beareth all things and endureth all things, so in the name of Jesus I am opening you tonight with everything I believe still standing exactly where it stood.
  2. Fear that opening a door counts as giving ground, get off my hands in the name of Jesus. A beam bears a roof it never once agreed with, and the Holy Spirit who gave Paul that word has never asked me to be less sure in order to be more kind.
  3. Lord Jesus, You have borne with me for two years and four months and You never once agreed with me to do it. Your word says love beareth and endureth, and Your Spirit is holding my end of this while my convictions stay right where they are. The set is out on the bench in the light, and the latch on my side is up.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
