Your Own VoiceEphesians 3:12

Delivered at 12:07

This message is for the pastor you text at midnight instead of saying it yourself

Twelve oh seven in the morning, and Renata is sitting on the edge of the bed with her thumb hovering over the send button.

The message is four hundred words long. She has rewritten it four times. She took out the part that made her sound dramatic, put half of it back, and moved the actual thing to the end where it would land softer.

It goes to Pastor Neil. It always goes to Pastor Neil.

He is a good man and he answers, every time, usually by six in the morning, sometimes just three words. Praying, sister. Standing with you. And she reads it standing at the coffee maker in the dark, and something in her chest lets go, and she gets through the day.

She has been doing this for six years, and she can tell you exactly where the relief lives. It is not in his reply. She has timed it. The relief arrives the instant the little word appears underneath her message.

Delivered.

Not answered. Delivered. Handed to somebody qualified. Out of her hands and into a set of hands that God is known to listen to.

Her Bible is on the nightstand under a hair tie and a glass of water. There is a book of written prayers beside it that somebody gave her at a retreat, and she reads out of it most nights, and it is beautiful, and every word in it belongs to a man who died in 1834.

She has not said one sentence of her own to God in longer than she can work out.

Tonight the message goes. Delivered appears. She lies back and waits for the small mechanical comfort of three gray dots to start moving at the bottom of the screen, because sometimes he is up, and sometimes they come, and when they come she sleeps like a child.

The dots do not come.

They do not come because Pastor Neil is sitting on a plastic chair in a corridor two towns away with his phone off and his mother's hand in his, doing the exact thing a pastor does. Nobody in this story has done a single thing wrong.

But it is now twelve forty and Renata is lying in the dark with a live thing in her chest and nowhere on earth to put it, and the ceiling is just a ceiling, and the room is very quiet.

Somewhere in your phone there is a name at the top of a thread, and a good person on the other end of it, and a whole practiced ritual for handing over what you are carrying before it can sit in the room with you.

And you have not said it straight to God in so long that you are honestly not sure the machinery still works.

Delivered at 12:07

The room you already have the key to

Before anything else in this message, hear me about the man in the corridor.

Pastor Neil is not the villain in this and nobody is making him one tonight. He answered you six years running. He prayed at six in the morning when he did not have to. Somebody who carries your name in front of God before his own feet hit the floor is a gift, and you hold on to a gift like that with both hands. Nothing here asks you to give up one person who has stood with you.

What we are dealing with is not who you have been going to. It is the thing that quietly stopped while you were going.

There is a letter written from a prison cell to a church full of people who had grown up outside the fence, people with every reason to think the good stuff was for somebody with a better pedigree, and the man writing it says this about them and about you.

In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.Ephesians 3:12

Read the tense on that. Not you may one day have. Not access is available on application. We have. Present, already, in hand.

And boldness there is not a personality type. It is not for the articulate. In the old sense of that word it was the plain right of an ordinary citizen to stand up in the assembly and speak, out loud, in his own accent, without a sponsor. That is the standing that was bought for you.

So take this off the page and into your bedroom at twelve forty. You have access. Not access to Neil's access, not a place in a line behind somebody with better wording. Your own, in your own name, tonight. I am not the one saying it: that is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a written word off a page and into a dark room where somebody is lying still.

Now let me name the thing under this, because it is not laziness and it was never laziness.

Here is why the relief lives in Delivered. If Neil prays and nothing changes, then Neil prayed and heaven did what heaven does and it is all above your pay grade. But if you pray, in your own plain words, and the room stays quiet, then you have a piece of information about yourself that you have spent six years arranging not to receive.

So you send it out through somebody else. That is not weakness. That is insulation, and you built it because it hurts less, and I understand exactly why you built it.

But I have to tell you what it costs, gently, because you are worth the truth. The insulation keeps out more than the silence.

You were brought near, and the veil was torn from the top down, which is to say it was torn from His side and not yours, by hands you never had to reach up to. It has never once been sewn back up. Nobody has been standing at that opening checking accents, and the Holy Spirit is at this moment the one inside you making the words when the words will not come.

And I am not going to promise you what the room does when you speak. He answers as He answers, in His own way and at His own timing, and sometimes the answer takes a shape you would not have chosen. What I will tell you plainly is that the silence is not a verdict on you. A quiet room is not evidence. Scripture never once makes a quiet night mean God has reviewed you and declined, and the Holy Spirit has never treated your plainest sentence as an inferior submission.

You have your own voice, and God answers you, personally, and not the man in the corridor on your behalf.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is smaller than you think.

Not a resolution to pray better. Not thirty minutes. Not a rule about the text messages, because the text messages were never the sin and I am not taking your pastor away from you.

Just an order change. You go first.

Say it out loud, in your voice, in the room you are in, before you send anything to anybody. Then send the message if you want to. Send it every night if you want to. But you speak first, because the badge is live and the light goes green and it has been green the whole time.

You have boldness and you have access and you have it now, and you did not get it by being good with words. Scripture says it comes by the faith of Him, which means it was bought and handed over and none of it hangs on your delivery, and the Holy Spirit inside you is the very one who groans on your behalf when you have nothing left to spell.

Somebody has been listening for your voice specifically, for six years, and He does not want the four-hundred-word version.

Declare this over yourself

Say them sitting up with your feet on the floor. This standing is not yours by nature and not yours by nerve: in Christ you are an ambassador with the right to speak, and you speak under His will and never over it, and you leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Twelve oh seven, you are not a locked hour and I am not lying still in you any more with a live thing in my chest. Scripture says we have boldness and access with confidence, present tense, already in hand, so the room where I am lying is a room I have the key to.
  2. Fear that if I say it myself and nothing moves, the nothing is about me, you are coming out of this house in the name of Jesus, and you are taking the insulation with you when you go. The veil was torn from the top down, by His hands and not mine, and nobody has ever stood at that opening checking accents.
  3. God, You are not on the other end of a thread and You never were. I have my own voice and You answer me, so tonight I go first, out loud, in my own plain words, and then I tell my pastor what I already told You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
