Every Seat Counts1 Peter 4:10

Nobody Prints the Alto Part

This message is for the sign-up sheet by the door you have read every week for two years

The sound system died forty seconds into the second song, and it is the best thing that happened to Toni Ridgeway in two years.

She had read the sheet by the door that morning, same as always. It is laminated at the top and paper underneath, and there is a dry-erase marker on a length of blue string, and the marker has been dead since roughly the spring of last year, and nobody has replaced it, and everybody has stopped noticing.

Greeters. Nursery, ages one to three. Parking team. Meal train, Ferrell family. Counting team, second and fourth Sundays. Fellowship hall setup.

Toni had read that sheet every single week for two years and had never once put her name on it.

She had a whole private set of reasons and she could produce them in order. Nursery needed a background check and she kept meaning to fill out the form. Greeting meant talking to people she did not know, in a doorway, before coffee. Parking was outside, in February, in this state. The counting team met at a time she was never free.

All of that was true. None of it was the reason.

The reason, which she had never once said out loud, in two years, to anybody, was this: if she wrote her name on that sheet and then could not do it, or did it badly, or forgot, everyone would find out something she already suspected. That she is not much. That she is a name on a roll and everything that matters in that building happens without her, and that this is not an accident of scheduling, it is a fair assessment.

Then, a Sunday in October, the sound board died.

Not the power. The lights stayed on and the heat kept running. The board simply gave up: no microphones, no monitors, nothing coming out of anything anywhere.

There was that pause where three hundred people wait to be told what to do.

And the man up front, who is not a dramatic person and has never made a moment out of anything in his life, said, "Well. Let's sing anyway," and started it himself, unamplified, a little too low for comfort, which everybody sorted out by the second line.

And the room sang.

Toni heard it start out ragged. She heard it find itself. And somewhere in the third verse, with no instruments and nothing to hide inside, she heard the actual sound of that room, which she had been standing inside for nine years and had never once heard from the outside.

And underneath the melody, holding it up, there it was. The alto line. Thirty or forty people, most of them women over fifty, some of them not remotely in tune, doing the thing they have done every Sunday of their lives.

Including her. Including her own voice, in it, part of it, holding up a chord that would have gone thin without it.

Two years of reading a sheet. And she had been ministering in that room every week for nine years, and it had never once appeared on a list, and it had never once been optional to the sound of the place.

After the service she went to the door out of habit and picked up the marker on the string, and it was dead, of course.

So she put it down, walked into the fellowship hall, and stacked forty chairs.

She told nobody.

A schedule is not a census

There is a small phrase in Peter's letter that is doing something enormous, and the tense of it is the whole thing.

As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.1 Peter 4:10

Hath received. Past tense. Completed. Before any list existed, before any laminated header, before there was a doorway to stand in and a marker on a string to be dead.

So take this in before you read one more line. You have already received. Not you are being considered. Not you would be if you applied. That is not encouragement I have made up for you. 1 Peter 4:10 says hath received, and it is the Holy Spirit who did the distributing, and He does not consult a schedule before He hands something to a person.

Look at what Peter calls the grace, too. Manifold. Many colored. It is a word about variety, about a thing showing up in more forms than anyone has managed to write down.

Which brings us to the sheet.

That sheet is good. Somebody made it because things genuinely need doing and people genuinely need to know when. Nothing here has a word to say against it, and nothing here has a word to say against the people who keep it up or the ones whose names are on it.

But look at what a sheet can hold. A sheet holds tasks that need a name attached to a time and a place. That is its entire job. It is a schedule.

And you have been reading a schedule as though it were a census. Scripture never once takes a roll of who belongs by who is rostered, and the Holy Spirit has never yet distributed His gifts according to who is free on second and fourth Sundays.

Here is the plainest way I know to say it, and I say it as someone who has spent a life around music.

Nobody prints the alto part.

The bulletin has the preacher. It might have the person leading the singing. It does not have the thirty people whose voices are the reason a room sounds like a room instead of like a few people at the front and a lot of people listening. Take those thirty out and everyone would feel it in about four seconds and not one of them would be able to tell you what changed.

That is you, and it has been you the entire time. The written word calls the church a body, and a body's parts do not audition, and the Holy Spirit is the one who set each one in its place, and He was not short of options when He set yours.

Now, the thing you have never said out loud.

You have believed that if you signed it and then fell short, the room would discover something about you that you already believe. Let me be careful here, because this is tender ground and I am not going to be clever on it.

You are not on probation in that building. Nobody there is running an assessment of you, and God certainly is not. The written word says the gift was received, past tense, freely, and the Holy Spirit did not hand it over on the condition that you perform well enough to keep it.

And the ordinary presence you have been discounting for two years is not a placeholder for real service. It is real service. Showing up, singing the third verse, being one of the faces a nervous newcomer sees and reads as these people are glad to be here, that is not the waiting room. It is the room.

The breakthrough

Nothing about your standing in that gathering is about to change, because it was never what you thought it was.

You have not been waiting to be brought in. You are in, and you have been carrying part of the weight of that room since before you noticed. That is what is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been distributing this and holding it steady for nine years, whether or not anybody ever wrote it on a sheet.

So here is the turn. Not signing the sheet, because that is not the point and this article does not know your Tuesdays. If you sign it one day, wonderful. That is not what is being handed to you tonight.

What is being handed to you tonight is the truth that ministering, in Peter's own sentence, is what a person does with what is already in their hands. Not with a role. Not with a slot. With what is in their hands right now.

You have something in your hands, and God put it there. Scripture says as every man hath received, and the Holy Spirit is the one who chose what you got, and it has been working in that room for years while you stood at a door reading a list to find out whether you counted.

You counted. You were counting the wrong thing.

Declare this over yourself

Your standing is Christ's standing delegated to you, and you speak as His ambassador and never as the owner of anybody else's conscience. Keep these words under "not my will, but Thine." God remains sovereign over every room and every answer, and His written word remains settled beneath your feet.

  1. Sheet by the door, I have read you every week for two years and I finally know what you are. The word of God says as every man hath received the gift, so in the name of Jesus you go back to being a schedule of tasks, and the roll of who counts in this room was written somewhere else, and my name has been on it the whole time.
  2. Fear that if I put my name down and then could not carry it this room would find out I am not much, get off me in the name of Jesus. Holy Spirit, You handed me the gift before anybody handed me a pen, and what You gave is already in my hands and already working.
  3. Lord Jesus, You built a body and not a program, and Your word says every one of us has already received something to hand around. I am stacking the chairs this week and telling nobody, and I am singing the third verse like the room needs it, because it does.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
