The Foil Still Crimped at the Corners

This message is for the potluck dish that comes home as full as it went

The foil is still crimped at the corners.

That is how she knows before she has even picked it up. She does the corners a particular way, fold, press with the side of the thumb, run the flat of the nail along the edge, the way her mother did it, because a tray done properly does not slop in the trunk. It takes an extra minute at half past nine in the morning.

Six hours later the corners have not been touched.

Twenty-four honey oat squares, cut before she left the house, with the spatula still rolled up in its paper napkin beside them.

One square is gone. She sees it as she lifts the tray: a gap in the second row, and then, on the windowsill by the radiator, half of that square on a napkin where a boy of about six put it down and went to find his shoes.

She carries it out through the hall past two men stacking chairs. One of them looks at the tray and says, kindly, "Ah, did nobody get to yours?" and she says, "Their loss!" bright and fast, and she is through the door before he answers.

The tray goes on the passenger seat. She does not start the engine.

Fourth Sunday of the month, the shared lunch, since the year her youngest started school. She has never missed it and never brought anything else, because these are good, genuinely good, her mother's recipe, and there has never been anything wrong with the squares.

She sits with her hands in her lap and does the arithmetic she has done before and never let reach the end. Six years. Forty-something trays. And this time it gets there, and it arrives whole, the way a thing arrives when it has been assembling itself out of sight for years.

If I stopped coming, that lunch would be exactly the same lunch.

She looks at the foil, still crimped at all four corners, and understands something she has not let herself see. The tray was never a tray. The tray was evidence. For six years she has carried a small quiet instrument into that hall and read it in the parking lot afterward, and every reading said the same thing, and today she believed it.

She peels back one corner and eats a square in the car.

It is good. It is really good. And that, somehow, is the worst part of the afternoon, and she laughs out loud alone in a parking lot, and then she stops laughing.

The Foil Still Crimped at the Corners

Two are better than one

Look at what you have been using as the instrument.

Not the squares. The uptake. How much of what you bring gets used, measured on the way home, at the point where nobody is watching. It is an honest instrument, and the right one for a caterer, and the wrong one entirely for a member of a body, because a body is not an audience with a queue. The written word calls it a body, and the Holy Spirit arranges the members in it.

Scripture has a sentence about the two of you, and it does not measure that way.

Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.Ecclesiastes 4:9, 10

Read what the reward is for. Their labor. Not the reception of the labor, not the applause for it, not the count of who took some. The labor.

And then look at what the writer reaches for when he wants to show what the second person is actually worth. He does not show them being useful. He shows them being there when somebody goes down.

You are not a spare, and you never were, and Ecclesiastes 4:9 puts the value of the second person in their presence rather than their uptake, and the Holy Spirit did not bring you into that hall six years running by accident.

Now here is the thing your instrument was never able to see.

That hall had four other trays on the table and a hot dish by the door, and people eat what is nearest the door, which is what people do at twelve thirty with children pulling on them. Nobody in that room chose against you. There was no verdict, and the man stacking the chairs meant nothing by it and would be horrified to know you carried his sentence to the car.

And I am not putting one word in your mouth against anybody who runs that lunch. Not one. This has nothing to do with them, they are doing an honest week's work, and the last thing I want is you walking in next month with something to prove.

What I want is the scoreboard out of your hands entirely, because it was never yours to hold and has never once been accurate.

But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.1 Corinthians 12:18

God set. Every one of them. As it hath pleased him.

You were set in that body by God Himself, and it pleased Him to do it, and 1 Corinthians 12:18 says so in words nobody can bend, and the Holy Spirit did the placing long before anybody tasted anything of yours.

That placing is not on review. It did not come with a probation period, and there is no clause in it about uptake. You have been trying to earn a position you were given, and the giving happened first, and it happened because it pleased Him.

Let me say the other half of that half eaten square on the windowsill, because you filed it as nothing.

A boy of six wanted one enough to take one. He got distracted, the way a six year old does, and went to find his shoes. That is not a verdict either. That is a child in a warm hall on a Sunday, and if you knew how much of the kingdom moves at that scale you would sit down.

Here is what your presence actually is, and it is not attendance.

Ecclesiastes says woe to him that is alone when he falls, because he has not another to help him up. The second person's whole value in that sentence is availability. Standing readiness. Being in the room, week after week, so that on the day somebody goes down there is a hand within reach. Nobody sees that until the day it is needed, and then it is the only thing in the building that matters.

You are needed there in a way no tray has ever been able to measure, and God's own word puts it plainly in Ecclesiastes 4:10, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person going back to a room for six years without ever telling them why.

The breakthrough

So you are not sitting in that parking lot deciding whether to keep bringing the tray. Cross the question out. It came off a broken instrument.

Here is what is settled. God set you in that body because it pleased Him to, and Ecclesiastes 4:9 says the reward is for the labor and the worth of the second one is that they are there, and the Holy Spirit has been holding you in a place you could not see the shape of.

The fifth bell does not find out what it is worth by counting how many people can name it. It finds out on the night it is not rung.

And you are not going to make anybody notice you next month. You are not going to ask for a job or drop a hint or arrive with something to prove. You are going to walk in as what you already are, which is a member God placed, and you will know it whether or not the tray comes home empty.

However He answers, and He answers as He chooses, 1 Corinthians 12:18 stands and the Holy Spirit did the placing. Your place in that room was never up for a vote.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the car with the tray still beside you. You are not talking yourself into a rank here: God set you in that body, in Christ you belong to it already, and Ecclesiastes 4:9 is the ground under every word of it, carried into a parking lot by the Holy Spirit. Say them out loud, and whatever He does with your ordinary week is His to decide and never something you have to make happen.

  1. Tray that came home full, you are twenty-four honey oat squares under crimped foil, and you were never a scoreboard. The Word of God says two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labor, and the reward is on the labor and not on the emptying. Come home full as often as you like; you were never the thing measuring me.
  2. Sum I have been doing in the parking lot, you are out of this car in the name of Jesus. God set the members every one of them in the body as it pleased Him, and He did the setting long before anybody tasted anything of mine. I am not an extra pair of hands who turned up early; I am a member He placed.
  3. Lord, You set me in this body because it pleased You to, and Your word says every one of the members, which includes the one at the far end of the table. I am doing one unasked thing this week and telling nobody at all. The bell that nobody can name is still ringing in the peal.
