Under the House at Six in the Morning

There is a chain link fence on Ravenna Street with a bad gate, and two men have been talking over it since 2005.

Wendell Pike is on the north side. Wendell brings the Lord into everything. The tomatoes came in because the Lord is good. The transmission held out one more winter because the Lord is good. His knee is what it is and the Lord is still good. He is not preaching and he is not working an angle. That is simply how the man talks, the way another man mentions the ball game.

Byron Teale is on the south side, and he nods.

Twenty years of nodding. Twenty years of "mm," and "that's something," and then a half turn toward the driveway and a question about the gutters, because the gutters are safe and have never once required Byron to say what he actually thinks.

Here is the part nobody at that fence knows. Byron believes it. He has believed it since a hospital corridor in 1998, on a night he does not talk about, in a way he could not take back if he tried. He prays in the truck. He reads at the kitchen table before anyone else is up, with the stove light on and the rest of the house dark.

And in twenty years he has never once said one word of it out loud where another human being could hear him.

He has a name for that in his own head, and it is not a kind one.

Then came the freeze in January, the one that shut the schools for three days.

Byron woke at twenty to six and heard a shop vac running. Wendell's pipes had let go under the house, both supply lines, and there was a seventy-one-year-old man on his knees at the access hatch with a flashlight in his teeth.

Byron went and got his pipe wrench and his headlamp.

So there they were at six in the morning, two men flat on their backs in eighteen inches of clearance, mud in the collar, breath fogging in a headlamp beam, working a coupling by feel because neither could turn his head far enough to see it.

And Wendell, in the dark, said, "The Lord carried me through last February. He is carrying me through this one."

And Byron Teale, lying in the mud under a stranger's house where not one living soul could see his face, heard himself say it.

"He's got me too, Wendell. I have never said that out loud to anybody in my life."

There was a pause a second and a half long.

Then Wendell said, "Hand me the wrench."

That is all. They got the line coupled by eight. Byron came up out of that hatch caked to the elbows with the sun already high, and stood in the cold with his heart going like a man who had set down something he had carried up a hill for twenty years.

We cannot but speak

Peter and John were hauled in front of the council and told, in so many words, to stop. Not to soften it. To stop, in this name. Watch what they answered with.

For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.Acts 4:20

Read that again slowly. They did not say we have decided to be brave. They did not say we have counted the cost and accept it. They said we cannot but speak, which is not a resolution at all. It is a description of pressure.

Something was in those men that would not stay down.

That is the whole engine of it, and almost nobody is told this. The speaking Peter describes does not arrive from outside as a duty laid on a man. It rises from inside, and the only question the council could raise was whether it would be let out.

You are not a man short of nerve. You are a man carrying something that has been pushing at the back of your teeth at that fence for twenty years. I am not making that up about you. The written word says we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard, and the Holy Spirit who put that pressure in Peter is the same Spirit putting it in you every time Wendell mentions his tomatoes.

Now let me say the kind thing, and I mean it as a plain fact and not as a comfort.

The nodding was never contempt. You have not been ashamed of Him at that fence. You have been unpracticed, and those are two entirely different conditions, and nobody ever sat you down and explained the difference. A man who has never once done a thing out loud is not a coward. He is a man who has never done it out loud.

So there is no bill here for the twenty years. Nothing in Scripture hands a man a verdict for staying quiet, and the Holy Spirit who has kept you company in a truck cab and at a kitchen table with the stove light on since 1998 has not been keeping a tally on you either.

You have seen and heard something. That is the entire qualification Peter names, and you already meet it in full. The word does not say we cannot but speak the things which we have studied and can defend. It says seen and heard, and the Spirit of God is the One who showed you, on a night in a hospital corridor you still do not talk about.

Here is the second thing, and it is the one that actually frees a man.

Peter did not say it in a practice room. He said it in front of a council, which is to say he said it in the exact place a sensible man would not have chosen. Byron said it flat on his back in the mud where he could not see anybody's face and nobody could see his.

The first time it comes out of you, it most likely comes out somewhere you did not plan. Not the moment you rehearsed at the fence. Some other morning, sideways, with your hands full.

It is already in your mouth. It has been in your mouth the whole time, and it does not need one more year of getting ready. The written word calls it a thing seen and heard rather than a thing prepared, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over your shoulder marking you down for the years it took to surface.

And then, the part Wendell got exactly right without thinking about it.

He said, hand me the wrench.

He did not make a ceremony of it. He did not ask Byron to say more, or say it better, or say it in front of anybody. The sentence got said and the work went on, and that is the safest thing that could possibly have happened to it.

You were never made to argue this. You were made to have seen it. In Acts 4 they offered the council no proof at all, only what they had witnessed, and the Spirit who bore witness with their spirit bears witness with yours. The sentence you say does not have to survive a cross examination to be true.

Explaining is where most people lose their nerve, because an explanation invites a verdict and a plain sentence does not. Say the sentence and let it stand there in the cold.
