Down to the WaterMark 5:19

The Light Turned Green

This message is for the son who asked at fourteen what you actually believe and got a joke back

Ruben ran the bread route, and Saturdays his boy rode with him.

That was the arrangement from the time Matias was small enough to need lifting into the cab. Out of the yard at four, trays stacked to the roof, the truck smelling of hot crust and diesel, the same fourteen stops in the same order while the city woke up around them. Matias knew which shop owner wanted the count read back twice and which one never wanted to talk at all.

The Saturday it happened, Matias was fourteen and had been quiet for eleven stops.

Then, at the light on Bolivar and Third, with the engine idling and the wipers on the slow setting, he said it.

"Papa. Do you actually believe it? Or is it just for Mama."

And Ruben, who has been the funny one in every room he has walked into since he was nine years old, had something ready before the boy finished the sentence. It was about the rooster and the sacristan, and it is genuinely funny, and Matias laughed properly, the way a boy laughs when his father is being his father.

Then the light turned green.

Ruben let the clutch out and pulled across the intersection, and that was the end of it, and neither of them ever went back to it. Not that Saturday. Not the next one.

Matias got a job at the phone place the next year, and Saturdays stopped, the way Saturdays do. It was nobody's fault. Boys grow up and get shifts.

Ten months later, alone in the cab, Ruben stopped at the same light.

He was watching a woman set out buckets of flowers on the corner. And what came out of his mouth, out loud, in an empty truck, with both hands on the wheel, was this:

"I believe He is alive, and I believe He did it for me."

He did not decide to say it. It arrived the way a sneeze arrives. And then it was out there in the cab, in the air, in his own voice, in his own ears, and Ruben sat at a red light with his heart going like he had run up a flight of stairs.

Because he had never heard it before. Fifty one years old. He had believed it since he was a young man, in hospital corridors and at two funerals and every night of the bad year, and he had never once heard what it sounded like coming out of his own face.

And sitting there, he understood what the joke had been for. It was not to protect his son from religion. It was not to keep the morning light. It was to keep Ruben from having to hear himself say something he could not take back.

The light turned green.

He did not move. Somebody behind him leaned on the horn, and he lifted a hand in apology, and he still did not move, because he was saying it again.

You have a version of that light and that question.

Maybe it was your daughter. Maybe it was not a child at all: your brother, the man who does your tires, somebody who asked you straight out and got the funny answer, or the change of subject you are very smooth at by now.

The Light Turned Green

What He gave the man to say

There is a man in Mark 5 who wants to get in the boat.

He has just been set free, publicly, and he is sitting there dressed and in his right mind, and when Jesus goes to leave he begs to go with Him. Anybody would. And Jesus says no, and what He says instead is one of the kindest sentences in the Gospels.

Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.Mark 5:19, KJV

Look at what the man is not given. He is not handed an argument. He is not sent home with a position to defend, or a doctrine to get right, or a case to make against anybody. He is given his own story and told to say it to the people who already know him, which is the hardest audience on earth and the only one he has.

And notice what Jesus does not do first. He does not go through the years. There were years, and they were bad ones, years among the tombs where nobody could bind him, and Jesus does not audit a single one of them before He sends him home to talk. He sends him the same hour.

So hear this, and it is not my sentiment: you are not on probation for how long you have been quiet. The word says He sent that man out to speak the same day He met him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the sending, and He has never once required a person to serve time for silence before letting them open their mouth.

Because let us be honest about what the silence actually was.

It was not cowardice. That word gets thrown at people like you by people who have never had anything to lose in a room. It was a reflex, and a reflex is built out of something. Somebody laughed once. Somebody who talked loudly about God turned out to be a fraud, and you decided, at twelve or at thirty, that you would rather be quiet and real than loud and like that.

That reflex protected something worth protecting. It is simply out of date, and the Holy Spirit is retiring it, not prosecuting it.

Here is what nobody tells you about saying it out loud. The reason it is frightening is not the other person. You already know your son loves you and would not think less of you. The reason it is frightening is that a sentence spoken out loud has a body. It exists in the air. It cannot be edited afterward, and once you have heard yourself say it, you are a person who has said it, and something in you is afraid of becoming that person in public.

That fear has no right to stay in your truck. Scripture says confession is made with the mouth and not with the intention, and His Spirit is the one who moves a thing from the inside of a person to the outside, which is the entire journey and the only journey.

And your body is allowed to be involved in this. Faith in you is not a private opinion that stays in your head where it is safe; the whole design of it runs outward, into a voice, into air, in front of somebody. You have a mouth, and it belongs to you, and it is one of the ways He made a person able to say what is true about Him.

The man in Mark 5 went home and began to publish it, and the district marveled, and none of that was his doing. His job was the going and the telling, and His Spirit did the rest. It is already yours to do the same thing tonight, in a doorway, with one sentence, and the marveling is not your department and never was.

The breakthrough

One sentence. Out loud. To one person.

Not a conversation. Not the one you have been drafting in the truck for ten months, where you explain about the joke and apologize for it and put it all right. That one may come and it may not, and you do not have to earn back a Saturday to be allowed to speak today.

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is why your voice has any weight in this at all: an ambassador does not speak his own opinion, he says the written word his King has already said, and His Spirit is the one who carries it out of a room. Whether that sentence lands anywhere in another person is His to decide and the outcome is His. The saying is yours.

Pick somebody easy. This is not a test and there is no grade. Say the true thing plainly, and then, and this is the part that matters, do not explain it.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so an ambassador's authority is what stands under this, never your own nerve. Scripture has settled that He sent a delivered man home the same hour to tell his own people, with every one of the bad years still on him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a true thing from the inside of a man to the outside. Whether anybody is changed by it is His to decide and the outcome is His. The telling is yours.

  1. Joke I have ready for that question, you are off duty in this cab, and I am not reaching for you again tonight. Mark 5 says He sent a man home to tell his own people what the Lord had done for him, and He sent him the same hour with all the years still on him. There is a truer thing in my mouth, and it is coming out.
  2. Sound of my own voice saying it out loud, you are not evidence against me, and I am done being afraid of you in the name of Jesus. Scripture says that man went his way and began to publish how great things Jesus had done for him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a sentence out of a mouth that has gone years without it. Truth, you are welcome to be heard in this house.
  3. Jesus, You did not audit the years before You sent that man home, and You are not auditing mine. Holy Spirit, You put the sentence in me long before I ever said it, and the saying of it is Yours as much as the believing is. I am telling one person one true thing today, and I am letting it stand without explaining it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
