The Dish You Never Took Back

This message is for the settled conviction that God's real work is happening in other rooms, to people with more to offer, while your own kitchen is only where you wait

The dish lives on the second shelf, behind the roasting pan, and she has to move three things to get to it.

It is white with a blue rim and a chip out of the handle, and it is not hers. It arrived full of chicken and rice on the second night after her mother died, carried up the path by the woman two doors down, who did not knock twice and did not stay to be thanked. She washed it that week and stood it on the shelf to take back on the Saturday.

That was four years ago. She is forty-seven and the dish is still there.

It is not that she forgot. She moved it once a year when she wiped the shelves down, and every time the taking back got heavier, until it stopped being a dish and became a conversation she would have to have.

Six fifty in the morning, and a sermon is playing on the little speaker by the kettle while she scrubs the pan. A man in a stadium somewhere hot, thirty thousand people, his voice going up at the end of every line and the building going up with him. She has listened to him for six years.

Then she turns the tap off, the kitchen goes very quiet, and the thought arrives the way it always arrives, folded neat and perfectly polite.

That is where God is working. This is where I wash up.

There is a laminated card on her windowsill with a family on it, sent out from her church to a country she can find on a map and cannot spell. She prays for them by name and means every word. Underneath the praying is a private ledger she keeps without permission: on one page is the work of God, and on the other are the people who hold things steady while it happens somewhere else. She has known which page she is on since she was nineteen.

Two doors down, the woman with the blue rimmed dish has been on her own since March. Her husband's chair is still turned toward the window. Nobody has carried anything up that path in a long time.

And now I am going to stop saying she.

Because you have a shelf too, and you know exactly what is on it. You have a thing you already know to do, for somebody whose name you could say out loud right now, and it has sat behind the roasting pan for a year, or four, and you never once called that a delay.

You have been waiting to be sent. And you are standing in the sending, and you have been standing in it the whole time.

The Dish You Never Took Back

What is that in your hand

There is a man on the back side of a desert arguing with a burning bush that will not burn up, and he is losing.

He has been out there forty years with somebody else's sheep. When God tells him what He intends to do with him, Moses starts reading out his inventory. Who am I. They will not believe me. I have never been any good with words. Every sentence is a list of what he does not have.

God does not argue with the list. He asks one short question, in the present tense, about the thing the man is already holding.

And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.Exodus 4:2

A rod. A stick. Not a sword, not a scepter. A shepherd's stick, cut off a tree by a man who walks over rocks all day. It had been in his hand for forty years while he was certain his life had gone past being any use.

So hear this, and hear that it is not my idea being spoken over you. Scripture put that question into that conversation, and the Holy Spirit is asking it in your kitchen this morning, about the thing you are actually holding. What is that in your hand? You are not empty handed. You have been calling it nothing for years, and it was never nothing.

Watch what He does with it next, because He does not swap it out. He tells him to throw it down, and when Moses takes it up again by the tail it is the same stick. From that day the same piece of wood is called the rod of God. Same wood, same grain. What changed was whose hand it was understood to be in.

You are holding a rod of God and calling it a casserole dish. Forty minutes free on a Tuesday, a spare key, a car that starts, a number in your phone, a chair at your table nobody is sitting in: every one of those is already in your hand, in the room where you are standing. That is the written word talking, not me, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an ordinary object suddenly go heavy.

There was a shoemaker in an English village who understood this at a bench. A map of the world hung on his workshop wall, made of scraps pasted together and covered in his own handwriting, and he mended shoes underneath it and learned languages as he worked. When he stood up in a room of ministers and said what he thought God wanted done about the world, he was told, in so many words, to sit down. They were not wicked men. They were tired men, and tired men keep their hopes small, because hoping had cost them once.

But the story is not that he crossed an ocean, though he did. The sending had already started at that bench, years before he moved one inch, with an awl in his hand and a map of scraps on the wall. He began where he was standing, with what he already had.

Now hear the part I am not going to do to you. I am not adding a single item to your week, and this message is not asking you for anything. It does not need you tired, either: being worn out is not holiness, and Scripture never calls an emptied cup obedience.

And you are not behind. You are not disqualified by the four years, because the God who asked Moses that question waited forty years to ask it. The written word says He is the same yesterday, today and forever, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over you with a stopwatch.

Here is the thing that undoes the ledger. Look at where Moses is standing when the bush lights up. Not in a temple, not in Egypt: at the back of a desert on an ordinary working morning, in the place he already walks, and God arrives there and calls the dirt holy ground. He was standing on it and did not know.

You are standing on it. The kitchen at six fifty, the ward, the loading bay, the apartment with the thin walls, the school run. Scripture never records God asking a person to find a better location before He would speak, and the Holy Spirit is not somewhere else waiting for you to arrive. He is the One who made you restless in this room, and He did it on purpose.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it does not require you to go anywhere.

The question He actually asks is in the present tense. What is that in your hand?

Answer it out loud. Not the answer you think sounds spiritual. The literal one. A dish. A number. A key. Forty minutes. A chair nobody is sitting in.

You are sent. Not going to be sent, not on a list somewhere behind people with more to offer. Sent, now, from this room, with that. I am not inventing that over you: the written word puts God's question in the present tense, and the Holy Spirit is carrying it off the page into this room.

And I will not tell you what comes of it, or promise you that anything visible happens at all. Anyone who does has gone further than they were sent. The obeying is yours. What comes of it is His, and He has never once needed a bigger stick than the one already in the hand.

Do the small thing. It is not small.

Declare this over yourself

Say them standing, with the thing by the door where you can see it. This is not your own nerve you are speaking on: in Christ this authority is yours, delegated and never seized, and you speak representing the King. Say them under His will and never over it, because what comes of your obedience belongs to Him.

  1. Ordinary room, you are not a waiting room, you are a doorway, and I am standing in you on purpose. God asked a man at the back of a desert what was already in his hand, and a shepherd's stick did the rest, so what is in my hands here is enough to be sent with.
  2. Fear that the real work is happening somewhere else, to people with more to offer, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus; you have been eating my obedience for years and calling it humility. Scripture asks who has despised the day of small things, and the Holy Spirit has already named the one He is sending me to, and that one is close enough to walk to.
  3. God, You are not somewhere else. You are here, and You asked what was in my hand long before You asked me to move my feet. I am saying one name out loud tonight and doing the small thing I already know to do, and I am doing it as one who is sent and not as a spare pair of hands.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
