A Conscience That HoldsPsalm 26:2

The Draft You Have Saved Four Times

This message is for the questionnaire with no honest box to tick and a name at the bottom

A printer's room off a lane in London, and a stack of small books still smelling of ink.

Every man in his trade knew the rule: if a book is going to make trouble, put no name on it. Print it abroad, get it into the city in a barrel, and be somewhere else when the door goes.

Thomas Helwys took one copy off the stack and opened it to the blank leaf at the front, and wrote on it in his own hand, to the king.

Then he signed it.

Then, under his name, he wrote his address.

He had a wife and seven children and he knew exactly what he was doing, and he did the extra thing that nobody required of him, which was to make himself findable. He sent it to the palace. He was in Newgate prison not long after and he died there, and he was not yet forty.

And now the screen in front of you.

Fourth quarter form. It has been sitting open on your second monitor since Tuesday. Most of it took eleven minutes and was fine, and then there is the one field, marked required, with a small red asterisk, and a dropdown with five options in it.

None of them is true.

Not one is a lie exactly. That would be easier. They are all sort of true, and each one, once it has got your name under it, will mean something you do not mean.

And your name is already under it. It is auto filled, in gray, with the date beside it, because the system is helpful.

Tuesday you closed the laptop. Wednesday you opened it and read the five options again as though a sixth might have arrived overnight. Thursday you got as far as the arrow. This morning you clicked Save Draft, and the little box in the corner said Saved, and faded, the way it always does.

Four drafts.

And here is the thing you noticed on Wednesday and have not looked at directly since. You have begun composing the sentence you would say if somebody asked why yours has not come in yet. You have three versions of that sentence now. You have been rehearsing them in the shower.

Which means this stopped being a form some days ago.

The Draft You Have Saved Four Times

Try my reins and my heart

I am not going to name what is in that box, and I do not need to. You know what yours says. Mine would not be yours, and every one of us can feel the exact weight of our own.

What I want to show you is where the real examination is happening.

Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart.Psalm 26:2

He asks for it. That is the first strange thing. A man under real suspicion, with people circling, stands up and requests an inspection, and he requests it from the only inspector he cannot manage.

And look at what he offers up. The reins: the old word for the kidneys, and to the Hebrew mind the deepest inward place, the seat of the hidden self that nobody outside a person has ever seen. Try that, he says. Go all the way in.

You are read all the way through, right now, by the only examiner whose reading of you is accurate, and Psalm 26:2 is a man asking for exactly that, and the Holy Spirit is not squeamish about anything He finds in you.

Now put that beside the form.

That form cannot read your reins. No questionnaire ever devised has been able to reach the place where your conscience actually lives, and that is not a loophole to be pleased about, it is simply a true fact about forms. Five options in a dropdown are not a verdict on a soul, because they have no instrument capable of taking one.

Your conscience is not stored in that field. It is kept in the part of you that God tries and reads, it stands under His own word in Psalm 26, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding the light in there.

Hear me on what I am not doing. I am not telling you what to put in that box. That is between you, your conscience and the Holy Spirit, and it stays exactly there.

Let me say instead what has actually been happening to you since Tuesday.

It is not indecision. You are not a ditherer. You understood on the first read that whatever you click, you are signing, because your name is at the bottom, and so you have been carrying the entire weight of your integrity on one required field, as though who you are before God is going to be settled by an arrow at ten to five on a Thursday.

That is an unbearable amount of weight to hang on a dropdown. Nobody asked you to carry it there. Psalm 26 puts the weighing of a person in God's hands and leaves it there, and the Holy Spirit has not been waiting on the fourth quarter to find out about you.

David went back to this twice, and the second time is even plainer.

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.Psalm 139:23, 24

Search me. Lead me. The man who invites that examination is the man who has stopped being examined by everybody else, and that is the freedom in this. You have one Reader. He does not use forms and He is not confused about you.

You have an examiner already, and He is thorough, and He is for you, and His word says He tries the heart and leads in the way everlasting, and His Spirit is the one doing the leading while you sit there with the arrow under your hand.

A conscience that holds is not a conscience that wins the room. Paul put it plainly, that he exercised himself to keep a conscience void of offense toward God, and toward men. Both. He kept the thing intact and he did not turn every room into a battlefield to do it, and those two are not in tension, they are the same skill.

So no, I am not sending you into a confrontation. I am not telling you to resign, to report anybody, to send the email at midnight, or to make a speech at the meeting. Somebody is reading this with a real job and a real mortgage and people at home, and a stranger with a keyboard does not get to spend that.

You are keeping something, not winning something, and Psalm 26 shows a man keeping it by handing it to God rather than by handing it to the room, and the Holy Spirit is well able to keep what is entrusted to Him.

The breakthrough

You are not deciding your soul at ten to five on a Thursday.

The examination that settles who you are is already running, and Psalm 26:2 says who conducts it: Somebody who reads reins and hearts and has never once been fooled by a well chosen dropdown. He knows the sentence you have not said. He has known it since Tuesday, and the Holy Spirit has known it far longer than that.

That man who wrote his address under his own name did not manufacture courage in the printer's room that night. The thing that made the ink possible had been settled somewhere private long before, and it was not a question about a book. It was a question about whose he was.

Yours is settled too. It was settled in Christ, it stands written where Psalm 26 says God tries the reins, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping it lit in you while the cursor blinks.

Now take the weight off the form and put it where it can actually be held.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the desk, with the form still open if it is still open. You are not working up an authority here: you are in Christ, this standing was given to you rather than earned at a keyboard, and Psalm 26:2 is a man asking God for the one examination that counts, with the Holy Spirit carrying the request. Say them out loud, and whatever He does with that form is His to decide and never a thing you are required to guarantee.

  1. Questionnaire with no true box in you, you are a form, and a form has never once been able to read a person. The Word of God says the Lord tries the reins and the heart, and you have no field for either. Sit in the drafts folder as long as you like; you were never where my name is actually kept.
  2. Suspicion that staying quiet has already made me a fraud, you do not get to sit at this desk with me, and you are out in the name of Jesus. God searches the heart and knows the thoughts, and He has never once read a man's silence as his verdict. What is kept in me is kept before Him, and He is the one holding the light.
  3. Lord, examine me and prove me, try my reins and my heart, because Your word says that is what You do and Your Spirit is not squeamish about anything He finds. You read the part of me that no form has a field for. I am writing my sentence down tonight and putting it where only I will find it, and You have read it already.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
