A Conscience That Holds2 Corinthians 1:12

The Minutes Said Unanimous

This message is for the meeting where your silence went into the minutes as agreement

Nalani Kama had the sentence ready in the truck on the way over.

She had worked on it at the sink that afternoon and again at the stop sign by the school. One sentence, not a speech, not aimed at anybody. It went: "Before we vote, I want to say that Ricky taught half of us how to tie off, and the numbers do not know that."

Item six on the agenda was fuel dock scheduling. What it meant in plain language was that Ricky Lum, who has run that dock for nineteen years, was going from thirty hours a week to twelve.

And here is the thing she needs you to understand: the numbers were real. She had seen the same sheet everybody else had seen. Nobody on that board was cruel. Two of them had known Ricky since intermediate school, and the chair had gone out to the dock himself on Sunday to tell him first, so he would not hear it as a decision.

There was no villain in that room, and that is what makes it stay with her.

The chair said, "Any discussion?"

And there was that particular kind of quiet that has weight in it. Nine people at a folding table under a fluorescent light with the ice machine humming through the wall. To say the sentence, she would have had to be the first one. Not the second. The first.

She looked at her hands.

The chair said, "All in favor."

Hands went up around the table, and hers went up too, about half a second behind everyone else's, the way a hand goes up when it is following and not deciding.

The minutes came around by email on Thursday afternoon.

Two lines.

Item 6: Fuel dock scheduling. Approved, unanimous.

And above it, the attendance list, alphabetical. Kama, N. Second from the top.

She has opened that email more times than she would admit. Not to argue with it. It is accurate, she was there, her hand was up, and unanimous is the correct word for what the room did.

What she cannot get past is that there is now a document in the world, filed, numbered, and true, that says she agreed. And she did not agree. And there is nowhere on this earth that the other thing is written down.

That is the part that gets her at two in the morning. Not the vote. She has lost votes before and slept fine. It is that a sentence she genuinely believed went into her, at 7:14 on a Tuesday evening, and never came back out, and now the only record of that evening says something else.

She went back and forth for three weeks. Then one evening at dusk she was at her own kitchen table with the back door open and the mynahs going crazy in the mango tree, and there was an opened envelope on the table from the electric company.

She turned it over and she wrote the sentence on the back of it. All of it. Word for word, the way she had it in the truck.

She read it once. Then she folded it in half and put it in the drawer by the stove, the one with the batteries and the twist ties and the rubber bands off the newspaper.

Nobody was ever going to see it. That was not the point.

The point was that it was out of her throat.

The Minutes Said Unanimous

The other record

Paul is writing to a church that has been saying hard things about him behind his back, and the word going around Corinth is that his yes does not mean yes. He could have produced letters. He could have listed witnesses. What he reaches for is this:

For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world.2 Corinthians 1:12

Look at the word he picks. Testimony.

A conscience, in Paul's hands, is not a prosecutor. It is a witness, the thing in a person that takes the stand and says what it saw. Most of us have only ever met ours in the other role, the one that stands up at two in the morning and reads the charges, and that is exactly why we will not look at it. But Paul rejoices in his. He treats it as a friendly witness, and what it says as evidence that holds.

So there are two records of every room you have ever sat in.

One is the minutes. The minutes are honest and they are limited. They can record your hand, your name, your attendance, the time the meeting was called to order and the time it adjourned.

The other one is the testimony of your conscience, and it is the one Paul rejoices in, and it says something the first record has no way of holding.

And hear this, because it is the whole weight of the message: nobody wrote on that page but you and God. Your conscience was never in that room's keeping, and no secretary on earth has the pen for it. That is not a comfort I invented. Paul stands on the testimony of his conscience against a whole city's opinion of him, and the Holy Spirit is the One Scripture calls the witness who bears witness with our spirit, which means when your conscience testifies, you are not alone on the stand.

Now look at the last clause, because Paul does not leave the credit anywhere near himself. Not by fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God. Even the clean conscience is grace. He is not saying look how well I did, he is saying the honesty in me is His work, and that is what takes the shame out of the room.

You are not being asked to have been braver than you were. The conscience that hurt you on Thursday is a living conscience, and a living conscience is grace, not evidence against you. The written word says it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure, so that wanting, the wanting that has been aching in you since 7:14 on a Tuesday, is the Spirit at work in you and not a mark against you.

And I want to be careful here, because there is a lie standing beside this message that would love to be mistaken for it.

Silence is not surrender.

A conscience is not lost by being outvoted. It is not lost by being slow. It is not lost by looking at your hands in a room with nine people in it and a fluorescent light and four seconds to decide. A conscience is only ever lost by being handed over, and you did not hand yours over. It has been aching in your chest for three weeks, which is the surest proof in the world that you still have it. Scripture speaks of a conscience seared as with a hot iron, and a seared thing does not hurt. Yours hurts. The Holy Spirit has kept it tender, and He kept it tender on purpose.

Now let me stop saying she, because the person reading the same email for the fifteenth time is you.

You know the exact wording of the line. You know where your name sits in the list. You know that everything in that document is factually correct, which is what makes it impossible to argue with, and you have been carrying around the private knowledge that the truest thing about that evening is not written anywhere.

Tonight it gets written. You have your own hand, your own paper and your own conscience, and God has never once needed a room's permission to hear what you believe. The word says the Lord looketh on the heart, and He was reading the page nobody else could see while the hands were going up around you.

The breakthrough

The sentence comes out of your throat tonight.

Not into that room. I am not sending you back into that room, and if anybody tells you the measure of your conscience is whether you go and reopen item six, they are adding to what God said. He never once told you the consequence was yours to arrange.

Onto paper. In your own hand. Where only you will find it. A conscience that has been swallowed goes stale and rots into shame. A conscience that has been written down stays a conscience, and becomes a thing you have rather than a thing you failed to say.

It is yours right now, that page and that pen, and no power on this earth has any claim on either one. The written word says the testimony of our conscience is our rejoicing, which puts joy and honesty in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes it possible to write a true sentence about yourself without drowning in it.

And here is what changes, and it is quieter than you would like, and it is real. The next time somebody at that table says any discussion, you are a person with a written sentence in a drawer at home, and that is a different person from one who has swallowed one. What God does with it after that is His to decide.

Declare this over yourself

Your standing is Christ's standing delegated to you, and you speak as His ambassador and never as the owner of anybody else's conscience. Keep these words under "not my will, but Thine." God remains sovereign over every room and every answer, and His written word remains settled beneath your feet.

  1. Two lines in the minutes, you recorded a room and you never once recorded me. The Word of God says our rejoicing is the testimony of our conscience, and in the name of Jesus that is the record I am living out of tonight.
  2. Habit of reading my silence as consent, you have no pen and I am putting you out in the name of Jesus. Holy Spirit, You were in that room and You heard what I believed, and You are the One who has kept my conscience tender instead of letting it go quiet.
  3. Lord, my conscience is Yours and nobody on this earth has ever held the pen on it. I am writing tonight the sentence I did not say, and You already heard it in the four seconds I had.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
