Fadi fixed refrigeration. Twenty two years of it: the walk in coolers behind butcher shops, the ice machines in hotel basements, the long cabinets in supermarkets that hum at a pitch most people stop hearing by the age of six.
He spent his working life with his ear four inches from a compressor.
You do not get taught the thing he could do. It arrives after about the fifth year and then it never leaves: a man walks into a back room, does not look at a gauge, and knows. That one is starving. That one is fine and the fan is loose. That one has three days in it and then it is scrap. His employer put him in a van alone because he was twice as fast as the diagnostics.
At the gathering, Fadi handed out the sheets at the door.
He had done it for eleven years. Arrived early, took the box off the shelf, stood at the door, said good evening about ninety times, and afterward he stacked chairs, which is the other thing he did. Everybody in the building knew his face. A good number knew his name. His wife's name was known to more people than his own, because she made the tea.
Nobody had ever asked him what he did on a Monday.
Not out of coldness. It simply never came up in eleven years, the way a great many enormous things never come up.
Then one warm evening in the eleventh year he stepped out to the yard for air. Singing was going on inside. There were three men crouched around the water pump on the side of the building with a flashlight, disagreeing about it, and one of them was already reaching for a wrench.
And Fadi heard it from thirty feet away.
Not the hum. The thing under the hum. A thin dry rattle in it, the sound of a thing turning with nothing to turn in, which he had heard perhaps four hundred times in twenty two years and which he could hear in his sleep the way a mother hears a particular cough.
He said it before he had decided to say anything.
"That is running dry. Turn it off now or you lose it."
The three of them looked up. One of them reached over and killed the switch, and the rattle stopped, and there was that silence that comes after a machine that has been running a long time.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
And they said thanks, and they went back in, because the singing was still going.
Fadi stood in that yard on his own, and here is the part he has never told anybody, including his wife.
He was lonelier after that than before.
He worked out why on the drive home, at a set of lights. It was not that they had not thanked him, because they had. It was that not one of them asked how he knew.
That sentence had landed in the yard out of nowhere, from a man they had no information about, and then it went back to nowhere, and eleven years of standing at a door had left them with nothing to hang it on.
And then he got to the honest part, which took another mile.
Nobody had asked. And he had never once said.
Your eleventh year is going along fine. They know your name and your wife's name and which seat you take, second from the aisle, the one nobody else sits in.
And nobody in that building could tell you within a mile what you do all day.

What a joint actually is
Let me put the verse down first, because it is more physical than people remember.
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.Ephesians 4:16
Paul is talking about a shoulder. A knee. He is not being poetic.
Look at what he says the supply comes through. Not every part. Every joint. And a joint is not a part at all: it is the place where two parts touch. The supply is real, and the supply travels by contact.
That is why your eleventh year aches in the particular way it does. You are not sitting there wondering whether you matter in general. You are sitting there in a room full of people you like, with your name known and your Tuesday unknown, feeling like a piece of a body that has been set down beside the body rather than into it.
And you are joined into that body tonight, in your eleventh year, already, with nothing outstanding to arrange. I am not being kind to you: the written word says the body is joined and compacted, past tense and settled, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that joining, which is why it never depended on anybody in the room finding out what you do.
The measure of every part
Then read the next phrase. According to the effectual working in the measure of every part.
Measure is not rank. It is amount. It is how much there actually is of a thing, weighed honestly.
Nobody in that hall set your measure and nobody in that hall can revise it. Twenty two years of standing with an ear four inches from a compressor is not on any list in that building, and it is on His, exactly, to the year, because He is the one who let you spend your life becoming a man who can hear a thing that is dry.
And what you carry is not a hobby you might one day volunteer, it is a measure God set in you and has never once mislaid. Scripture puts the measure of every part in His hands and not in the room's, and the Spirit is the one who works it effectually, which is His word for actually doing something with it.
Being known is not the same as being placed
Now hear the difference, because this is where a message like this can do real damage.
Nothing in this is about a position. Not a role, not a schedule, not a platform, not a title, and not one word of it is a complaint about anybody who leads anything. Nobody has withheld anything from you. I have no idea what that building is like and neither does anyone else writing on a screen.
What has been missing is smaller and more ordinary than a position, and it is the thing a joint needs: contact. One person in that room knowing what is in your hands.
And you are supplying that body already, in your eleventh year, without a single person in it knowing what you do on a Tuesday. The word says the increase comes through the joints and never once says the joint has to be admired for the supply to travel, and His Spirit has been carrying it through you for eleven years while you thought you were only opening a door.
Here is what is being handed to you tonight, and it is not a plan for getting noticed.
It is the joining.
Not a place at the front. Not a conversation you have to start about yourself, which you would rather do almost anything than start. The joining, which has already happened, done by God, on the day He put you into that body and never mentioned it to the room.
You have spent eleven years feeling like a man standing beside a body. You have been inside it the whole time, supplying it, through contact you did not know was contact.
And you are needed there tonight exactly as you are, unannounced and unlisted, because He fitted you in Himself. That is what the written word says of every believer in a gathered body, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about the person in the second seat from the aisle, and what anybody there does with it afterward is His business and not yours to arrange.
Declare this over yourself
- Eleventh year in that building, you have known my name and never known my Tuesdays, and you are not the measure of what I supply. Scripture says the body is joined and compacted by what every joint supplies, so this week I do one unasked thing in that room and tell nobody at all.
- Fear that I am a name on a roll, you are put out in the name of Jesus. You have read eleven years of nobody asking as eleven years of nobody needing, and God set the measure of my part Himself and has never once mislaid it.
- Lord, I am not an attender of this body, I am part of it, and what I am carrying is needed here. You know to the year what is in my hands on a Tuesday, and You joined me in before anybody in that hall learned my wife's name, so I am walking back in there joined and not visiting.
