Every Seat CountsActs 2:46

The Morning the Sidewalk Stayed Dry

This message is for the meal train that went round the whole church and never came to your street

Chela is out at six with the hose.

Hers first, then the Reyes stretch, because they leave at twenty past five and there is no point hosing concrete at twenty past five, and then the corner house, where nobody has lived since the spring. Water first, to lay the dust. Then the stiff broom, in long pulls toward the gutter, the sound of it carrying up the whole block the way sound does before the buses start.

She has done this for years. Nobody asked her to. It is not a favor she is doing anybody, in her own mind. It is simply that a street should not be filthy, and she is awake.

In February her husband went in for the hip.

The church ran a meal train that month. A good one: three weeks of it, coolers on a step every second evening, a rotation of women with a folder, organized down to who brings what and which night is the son in law's. Chela knows this because she watched the car come down her street twice a week for three weeks and turn left at the end, toward the family two blocks over.

Nothing came to her gate.

And nobody decided anything. That is the part worth saying slowly, because it is true and it is not what a person believes at the time. There was a list, made off a printed directory, and the directory had Chela at the apartment she left four years ago, and the boy who typed the addresses is fifteen and did it on a Tuesday after school as well as anybody could have.

A line of type. That is all it was.

But Chela sat in her front room with the television off, listening to a car she recognized go past her gate and turn left, and something got filed in her that had nothing to do with meals. She did not cry about it and she never mentioned it, not once, to anyone. She just quietly concluded a thing about herself:

I am near that church. I am not in it.

She kept going. Of course she kept going. She was in her seat the following Sunday and every Sunday after, and she was out at six with the hose, and the conclusion sat there in her like a stone in a shoe she had stopped noticing.

Then, in August, she woke up at nine.

Fever. The kind that arrives overnight and puts you flat. She had not slept past six since she was a girl, and she surfaced in a hot room with the light all wrong, working out what day it was.

At twenty past nine she got to the door.

There were three people on her step.

The Reyes boy, in his work shirt. The woman from the corner with the enormous gentle dog. And a man she had seen for eleven years and never spoken to once, who was standing there holding his hat like a man at a funeral, and who said:

"The concrete was dry."

She looked at him.

He said, "I go past at twenty past six. I have gone past at twenty past six for eleven years. It has never once been dry."

And Chela stood in her doorway with her hair not done and her hand on the frame, and understood that a street had been reading her every single morning for years, and that all that time she had believed herself invisible.

You have a version of that February. Something came round and did not come to you, and you did not make a scene, and you filed a conclusion about where you actually stand.

The Morning the Sidewalk Stayed Dry

The list was never the membership

Let us be careful here, because there is a cheap version of this message and it is not the one being handed over.

Nobody in that building failed you. A list is a list. Somebody made it out of the information they had, between other things, and if you go looking for a villain in a spreadsheet you will spend a year hunting somebody who does not exist and come out more alone than you went in.

The problem was never the list. The problem is what you did with it afterward, alone, in a front room with the television off.

And what you did with it is the thing the Holy Spirit wants to take out of your hand tonight.

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,Acts 2:46, KJV

House to house.

That is where the church in Acts actually happened. Not only in the temple, where anybody could count heads, but from house to house, on streets, at ordinary hours, with food somebody carried on foot from one door to the next. No route drawn up. No rotation with a folder. A body, in the houses, moving by people doing the thing in front of them.

So take this over yourself right now, and it is not my kindness, it is the written word: you are in the body, and you were put there. Scripture says God set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the setting, and He has never once done it off a printed directory.

That is a legal fact about you, and it does not move when a car turns left at the end of your street.

Now hear the second thing, and let it land properly, because it is the one that has been sitting in your own hands all this time without a name on it.

The sweeping is an office.

Not a nice habit. Not a way of keeping busy. Eleven years of a street clean at twenty past six is eleven years of every person on it arriving at their bus, their shift, their school gate, over ground somebody got up early and prepared. Nobody assigned that. It is being done, daily, house to house, by a member of the body, exactly the way Acts describes.

And you did not need a title for it, which is the whole point of what Scripture says about the ones who serve without being seen. The Holy Spirit keeps the count and He has never lost one.

Now the honest part, because this message will not sell you something it cannot deliver.

This is not a story about being noticed eventually. Three people happened to be on a step in August, and that is a lovely morning, and it is not the promise. There are people who will sweep for twenty years and nobody will ever knock. The knock is not the payment and it was never the point, because the point is what was already true at six o'clock every morning of those eleven years, whether one soul on that street ever said a word about it.

You have not been near this body. That word near is what got filed in February, and it has no right to stay in your house. Scripture puts you in the body by God's own placing, the Holy Spirit is the one who put what you are carrying into your hands, and near is not a category He has ever used about His own.

The breakthrough

Take the word near out of your mouth.

You have been carrying a sentence since February and it is not true. Not a slight exaggeration, not a mood. Not true. The body you belong to is not a route and never was, and what you are already doing at six in the morning is the church in Acts happening on your block, whether or not a single person ever writes it down.

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is why any of this holds: Scripture says God set you where you are, His Spirit did the setting, and an ambassador does not appoint himself. Whether anybody ever knocks, or thanks you, or notices at all, is His to decide and the outcome is His. What is settled tonight is where you stand, and you stand inside.

So do the next unasked thing. Not to prove anything, and not to be seen doing it. Because that is what a member of a body does, and it turns out you have been one this whole time.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, which is the whole ground under these words: an ambassador stands on his King's placing and never on his own reputation. Scripture has settled that God set the members every one of them in the body as it pleased Him, and that the first church went house to house, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does that setting and keeps the count. Whether anybody ever notices is His to decide and the outcome is His. Your place is not up for review.

  1. Street the route never came down, you are not a ruling on whether I belong to this body, and I am out at six tomorrow with the hose. Acts 2 says they went house to house, so the body was always in the houses and never in the route. My street is one of the houses.
  2. Conclusion I filed the week the coolers went past my gate, get out of my front room in the name of Jesus. The written word says God set the members every one of them in the body as it pleased Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the setting, so a line of type has never once moved a limb off a body. Place He gave me, you are not spare and you are not near, and I am standing in you.
  3. God, You set me on this block Yourself, and You have never needed a directory to find me. Holy Spirit, You put this in my hands and told nobody, and You have been keeping the count the whole time. I am doing one unasked thing for the gathering this week, and I am telling nobody I did it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
